PROJECTS
Below is a small sample of projects Thornfield has worked on, including work completed in Chilliwack, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver, and across British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Clinical Support & Research Centre (Exterior Steel Stud)
Thornfield is providing exterior steel stud engineering for this Clinical Support and Research Centre in Vancouver, BC, including panel lifting design and custom lifting lug development. We worked closely with the client, fabricator, and installer to support prefabricated wall panels, with a focus on constructability, lift sequencing, and site efficiency. Lifting and handling forces were treated as a primary design case, not an afterthought, allowing panel geometry, connection detailing, and lug placement to be coordinated early. Rendering by Diamond Schmitt Architects.

Spreader Bar (Structural Steel, Overhead Lifting)
We worked closely with the client to develop a purpose-built lifting beam for an American facility, with the structural analysis carried out in accordance with ASME BTH-1:2023. Torsion was a governing design issue due to the lift geometry and load path, and it was explicitly analyzed rather than treated conservatively or ignored. The design was developed using a combination of MapleFlow, RFEM 6, and bespoke Python notebooks to evaluate section properties, torsional response, load paths, and overall stability, resulting in a solution that is efficient, buildable, and clearly documented for fabrication and safe use.

Prince Albert Victoria Hospital (Steel Stud)
We completed (and are completing) design and field reviews for the steel stud walls and ceilings for this hospital in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan

Entry Portal and Table (Structural Steel, Aluminum, Concrete, and Timber)
We are providing the sructural engineering for a custom picnic table and entry portal at a City of Chilliwack park. Our team is collaborating closely with a local fabricator and contractor to ensure the design meets client specifications while serving the public effectively. Rendering by HausKraft Studios.

Broadway Subway Stations (Steel Stud)
Our team is supporting the structural design of steel stud systems for Vancouver’s Broadway Subway project, which includes six stations. Given the scale and complexity, careful coordination with multiple consultants has been essential throughout construction.

Structural Steel Frame for RF Chamber (Structural Steel)
This 70'x30'x16' steel frame was designed as an "exo-skeleton" to support the installation of a Radio Frequency Chamber which is to be installed in Wisconsin, USA. Thornfield has team members who are also registered in several US states. This project required extremely close coordination with the RF chamber supplier to ensure exact fit and no penetrations into the chamber.

Shop (Wood)
A member of our team served as engineer-of-record for this local shop. Through close coordination with the architect and general contractor, we delivered a cost-effective and efficient structural solution. The design utilized short shear walls and large door openings to create a unique shear wall system, eliminating the need for moment frames and maintaining conventional construction methods.

Rack Evaluation and Certification (Structural Steel)
We provide structural evaluation and certification of rack systems using advanced analysis tools, including RFEM 6. This technology allows us to model racks (and other structural elements) with precision, confirm load ratings, and quickly verify compliance with structural requirements. The project shown here involved a straightforward load evaluation and certification.

PNE Amphitheatre (Steel Stud)
We were engaged to provide engineering for the steel stud systems on this landmark project. Initially retained by the general contractor for pricing drawings of the parapets forming the arch exterior, we were later brought on by the wall and ceiling contractor to complete engineering for the remainder of the project. Rendering by Revery Architecture.

Masonry Veneer
We have provided engineering for numerous masonry veneer projects, including the one shown here. Our expertise in both steel stud and wood framing enables seamless coordination with other consultants to ensure proper backing and structural integration. Each system is carefully designed to achieve durability and maintain structural adequacy.

Electrical Room (Steel Stud)
This is a bit of a smaller project, but we've added it to our site to show that we can tackle whatever scope you have. We were engaged to provide steel stud engineering for a specialized scope within an existing building. The client required a fast turnaround, and our team successfully delivered the required drawings quickly.

MEI Renovation (Steel Stud)
This renovation project required steel stud solutions to address unforeseen site conditions as they arose. Our design work ensured the building was completed on time and ready for students returning at the end of the summer.
