History

Thornfield Consulting Corp was established to provide highly focused, technically rigorous structural engineering services to long-term clients who value precision, responsiveness, and forward-thinking design. The firm was built with the intention of remaining deliberate in scope and depth, prioritizing technical clarity and real construction experience over volume.

From the beginning, our goal has been to serve contractors, fabricators, architects, and developers who require thoughtful structural solutions and dependable collaboration. We set out to build a practice capable of responding quickly to new client requests while maintaining a high level of technical discipline and consistency.

Our work centers on structural steel connections, pylon sign design, cold-formed steel framing, masonry veneer support systems, and specialty structural components. We regularly assist on projects ranging from hospitals and schools to commercial facilities, barns, mezzanines, and steel-framed structures throughout British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

We are often engaged during early project stages to ensure structural systems are coordinated, buildable, and clearly documented. Our emphasis is on load path clarity, practical detailing, and structural solutions that perform not just in analysis, but in construction.

Technical Focus

Steel Stud and Cold-Formed Steel Expertise

Cold-formed steel design forms a significant portion of our engineering practice. Much of our work involves steel stud framing systems, both as secondary structural components and in load-bearing applications.

We work closely with wall and ceiling contractors and have become a recognized technical resource for steel stud design in our region. Our involvement often begins at the pre-tender stage to ensure pricing accuracy and structural clarity. We are also brought in to provide advisory support on complex projects requiring careful interpretation of CSA S136 and related standards.

Our familiarity with cold-formed steel extends beyond application. It includes a deep understanding of the governing code provisions and their practical implementation in real projects.

Technological innovation is central to how we operate. We continuously explore better ways to design, document, and deliver structural engineering services.

Our team has developed internal web-based tools to accelerate steel stud design and capacity calculations. These web-tools, coded in Python using the Django framework, incorporate functions derived directly from CSA S136 and AISI S100. Developing these programs required implementing capacity calculations from first principles, resulting in a deeper technical familiarity with the standard than reliance on off-the-shelf software alone.

We routinely evaluate new workflows, attend technical conferences, and refine internal systems to improve clarity, consistency, and efficiency. Innovation at Thornfield is not about novelty. It is about improving precision and responsiveness for our clients.

We are not structured to be a high-volume permit shop. Thornfield Consulting Corp is built as a boutique technical firm.
